The technologies that changed the world

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

Believe it or not, there are two basic technologies that changed our live today

  • Language

Humans are so different among other creatures that ever lived in this earth. Collect dogs from all other part of the earth, and put them inside a room. What will they do? Problably they’ll just barking each other. It’s unlike us, the human. When some people gathered in a room or so, we start to discuss about everything. We express our feelings, our minds, etc. Therefore, we human create technology to co-operate. It’s the basic of everything. Co-operation makes us stronger than any creatures that ever live in this world. Also, the co-operation principles (using language to communicate) is still used until today to make anything. No man is an island..that’s what we always say.

  • Writing

Ask an anthropolog, what makes a primitive or modern society different ?  I guess the answer is the modern society know how to write. They know how to transform their language into letters. Thus, they pass their knowledge to their descendant. Therefore, the society accumulate knowledge enough to build their world order (such as kingdom, concept of nation, concept of legal rights, etc) and even tame the nature (look at our world : DNA cloning, atomic bomb, space travel, etc).  Amazing isn’t it ?

Anyway, this blog topic is made to comment peoples that good enough to speak, but never read or even write down their knowledge. I guess it’s okay if you are good at speaking or commenting something. But remember this, your words or thoughts are nothing after some hours (who could remember every words or thoughts that we had said/thought every hours ?). It won’t be passed to your descendants (whether it’s your children or grand children). Therefore, you won’t add anything to this world if you pass away..(I must say that’s quite rude, no offence to anyone =P ).

So, start accumulate your knowledge..READ..Then share your knowledge to the world..WRITE..

Start blogging everyone !!

Love the changes

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

What is in this world that is never change ? Well, of course, the change itself. I guess that’s what Lao Tze’s saying years ago

Like it or not our world is changing, and it always change..Anyone who can’t follow it will die — the survival of the fittest theory. Of course, I don’t mean you’ll die or extinct if you don’t change =P

But why dont you think like this : you only live for a time, so spend it to explore the world.

Why should we affraid of changing ? If the changes not good for you, consider it as your most precious lesson. If the changes good, let’s keep it. And if you never change, you’ll spend all of your life in front of TV shows in coach, while asking yourself : what am I doing in this life anyway ?

I have good advice for you. Ever heard this poem ? "Footsteps in the Sand"..The poem said that you should never be afraid, because God Himself will carry you through the difficulties that you have.

So, everytime you have some changes in your life, step-up and face it. Believe in your heart, that everything that happens, happens in the hand of God and He won’t let you fail.

Rokok dan Buku, sebuah status sosial

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Ini hasil pengamatanku, no hard feelings for anyone..

Coba lihat gaya hidup top ten CEO dunia.

Tapi semua CEO punya satu kesamaan, they’re all love to read (and write). They’re all love to learn, either from their employees or read books/magazines/reports or even ask the experts directly.

So, pesan gw jelas : Jgn tertipu dgn iklan-iklan TV, jangan tergoda utk merokok demi pergaulan (krn merokok brings you to nowhere), dan get a nice book to be read.

Have fun with your books !!

Apa yang diminta ketika berdoa

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Apa yang kamu minta ketika berdoa (doa bebas, misal sebelum tidur)?

Saranku, mintalah hal-hal berikut :

Jangan minta hal-hal berikut :

  1. Lulus ujian
  2. Naik gaji / dipromosikan
  3. Punya duit buat beli motor/mobil/rumah
  4. Dapat jodoh

Alasannya :

Kalo keuangan perusahaan lagi memungkinkan, dijamin kamu langsung naik gaji =)
  3. Baca Mat 6:25-34….Isinya sangat menjawab doa lu ttg duit untuk keperluan hidup dan lain-lain..
  4. Nggak manjur..Udah pernah gw coba..Kayanya emang bener kata org, semuanya terjadi menurut kehendakNya. Semoga gw dikaruniai pasangan yang baeekkk bgt..(berhubung gw pasti nikahnya telat bgt)..hahahahaha =D

Re-inventing The Wheel

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

You’re just re-inventing the wheel..As I remember, those words are always said to me everytime I had some ideas. OK. I admit it. My idea weren’t original, but I had a point that you would never think.

First of all, I think re-inventing the wheel might means good for some fields while means bad for other field.

The “good” means come when you “re-invent the wheel” for learning purpose. Nobody learn how to run before they start to walk. This is the principle of learning. Start learning from the simplest one. It’s OK if you’re re-inventing the wheel.. As the matter of fact, I DO SUGGEST YOU to reinvent the wheel before you do something else that nobody has done before. If you are only learn how to build the wheel without ever really build it, I’m sure you’ll have a big trouble in creating new things.

The “bad” means come when you “re-invent the wheel” for business. Nobody is like to pay more for the same products/services (refer to my blog on customer behaviour). That is why least likely you will ever success with the same products/services that’s already run in the market.

My final conclusion, re-invent the wheel as much as you can. Then, build the new wheel based on the experience that you have from re-inventing the wheel.

Best Luck.

Accounting Your Time

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

I guess accounting your money is not so weird. So, what makes you think that your money need to be accountable ? Well, I guess everyone would have their own reasons. But for me, my money needs to be accountable because it’s worthy, it’s limited, and I need to know whether it could pay my needs or not..

The criteria for the money to be accountable is also similar to my time. My time is limited : 24-hours a day ( I wish I could have more than that, but God just don’t let me =D )..Thus, my time is precious. I dont live forever in this world. That’s why wasting my time is more like killing me softly. Of course, I wouldn’t call it “waste”, if I could enjoy it. That’s lead to the third criteria to account my time : do I have enough time to do things that I want ?

Well my friends, I can assure you that your time is worth enough to be accountable. Trust me in this one.

But let’s talk time accounting in business area. What is the benefit of having your time accountable ?
Let’s see…

  • For your clients or anyone that’s need your work
I must say, it’s so rarely to see the clients ask you to do your job as fast as you can. I think they don’t care whether you do it fast or not. What they need is just a certainity of “when the job is done”. Right ?
  • For your manager/supervisor
Let’s put yourself in manager/supervisor position for a while. What do you need ? You need exact time of how much time that’s needed to finish this project. Otherwise, the clients or your super-supervisor may upset to you.

But, that’s not the only thing that you can get from accountable time. Watch carefully for each item that’s everyone in your team has added in their time account. C might done marketing research twice faster than B. While B can design prototypes twice faster than A.

Yes. If you told your sub-ordinate to build their own schedule, they’ll put their most interesting item as number one, while leaving the other item for the rest. It’s the magic of human resource management. People is highly motivated by their interest rather than their ability. Putting these people according their interest may results a happy team that works twice faster than a team that’s grouped because of their ability.

  • For yourself
Let’s admit it, you can get old and dying without emptying your task/job list. It doesn’t matter how hard you work to make it empty, it’ll always be filled by new tasks.

So ? What I want to say is : life in balance. You don’t need to spend all of your time working in the office. But still, you could be the number one in the office, if you have a good schedule. To do this, separate tasks in different priority. Then do the top priority task first. If the un-prioritized task become unreachable, you don’t need to worry. Your upper-line manager won’t care about it (unless you put the wrong priority for the tasks).

Menyimpan Kebencian : Menyimpan Kentang Busuk

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

—-Taken from archive Forum-pembaca-kompas@yahoogroups.com

Seorang Ibu Guru taman kanak-kanak (TK) mengadakan “permainan”. Ibu Guru
menyuruh tiap-tiap muridnya membawa kantong plastik transparan 1 buah dan
kentang.

Hari berganti hari, kentang-kentang pun mulai membusuk, murid-murid mulai

Ibu Guru : “Bagaimana rasanya membawa kentang selama 1 minggu ?”

membawa kentang busuk kemana pun kita pergi. Itu hanya 1 minggu. Bagaimana
jika kita membawa kebencian itu seumur hidup ? Alangkah tidak nyamannya
…”

Kemarahan : Memancing Kepiting

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

—-Taken from archive Forum-Pembaca-Kompas@yahoogroups.com

disana mengajak saya memancing Kepiting.

Bagaimana cara memancing Kepiting?

Kami tinggal mengayun perlahan bambu agar ujung talinya menuju sebuah wajan

masalah, kehilangan peluang, kehilangan jabatan, bahkan kehilangan

Learning Faster … How ??

Friday, April 14th, 2006

This is the trick that I got when watching Human Mind VCD - from BBC.co
The website is also available at BBC’s website

Understand how the memory is made

First of all, let’s understand how the memory in our brain is made.
Reference : BBC’s website - The Omega Wave

Our brain works by transmitting electron signals from one neuron to other neuron. The electron is gathered in a place called “synapse” before it jumps to other “synapse” in other neuron. Now, between one neuron and other, there is a physical gap which make the electron transition not easy, unless there’s a bridge that connect through both of the “synapse”.

What we call memory actually is the chemical bridge that makes the electrons easier to jump from one neuron to other neuron. The more often we use the memory, the wider the bridge is. Adding memory to our brain means building a bridge between those neurons (that’s why adding memory to our brain is never as easy as it sounds =) )

So, how do we improve our learning ability ? Use Omega-3 acids !! Omega-3 acids is known making the “synapse” bridge building easier (read the article above)..So, get a lot of fish and beans for your daily food..

Learn in order
Reference : BBC’s website - Diary of a memory champion

In the VCD, a man that’s winning memory contest is challenged to remember the order of three sets of bridge cards. The cards is shuffeled, so its order is quite random. Could he remember the card that’s in the 10-th order ? the 50-th order ?

Yes he CAN..HOW ??

The man said that he use london famous places as the number and rank of the cards, and things that he brought as the visits those places as the card’s suit. So here’s how he map : Ace - London bridge, 2 - Big Ben, 3- Buckingham palace, etc. Thus the things that he brought is : teddy bear ( clover ), saw ( heart ), hammer ( spade ), etc..

So how did he map the cards : He remembered that he went to London bridge carrying teddy bear for the first time ( Ace clover - 1st card ), then he went to buckingham palace with hammer (3 spade - 2nd card), etc..

Well..simply, it’s easier to remember the order (how things are related to each other) than remember the random things.

Next time, when you must remember the crazy human digestion system, try to remember the order first..Then you’ll remember how those organs work.

Learn from the past knowledge
This one is very amazing. It looks like our brain do have some techniques, to build some new memories / ability by using the knowledge that we earn from the past.

The VCD shown a fireman, who was recently become a local hero for saving his friends from the fire explosion. How the fireman knew that there would be an explosion from the burning warehouse ? Intuition ?

First, the fireman realized that there was something wrong with the fire. The usual fire is burning yellow, this one is reddish and small. Thus, the fire was pointing inside the building. Most fire would point outside the building..

His memories as yearly fireman suddenly awaken. Thus, he had new vision of what was going on using those memories. First the fire is drawn inside the building because the air was sucked into the building. Thus, the color of the fire tends to red than yellow is because the fire didn’t have enough oxigen.

It lead him to one conclucion. The fire is running out the oxigen. So it drawed the oxigen fastly into the center of the fire (since there was a vacuum in the middle of the fire). The oxigen pressure in the middle of fire would rise very quickly, while the surrounding air pressure remains still..His final thought ?? It would explode !!!

So, what can we learn from it ? Learn to use the analogy. You have so many knowledge from your past. Use it to learn the new things.

Use the old knowledge as the base, then add the difference from the new things that you want to learn. You will learn faster.

Example : If you want to learn 32-bits microprocessor, use your 8-bits microcontroller knowledge as your base. Add things that makes 32-bits processors different from the usual 8-bits microcontrollers that you have already learned. It’ll make your learning path easier.
